Pro Life Rally

Feelings in Northern Ireland run high on the issue of abortion which has historically been illegal in the province.

The local assembly at Stormont has been in suspension for around three years and in July, MPs in Westminster passed the Northern Ireland (Executive Formation) Act, obliging the Government to regulate to provide for access to abortion.

This was to come into effect if the Stormont Executive is not restored by 21 October, with regulations required to be in place by the end of March 2020.

On 7 September 2019 two rallies were held in Belfast in relation to the abortion issue. The Rally For Choice was to support the liberalisation of the law in relation to abortion while The March For Their Lives was organised to protest against the reform.

March for Their Lives held a rally in Custom House Square. The crowd was addressed by Bernadette Smyth, director of Precious Life
